People pay hundreds of rands per month for short term insurance. That is in the event of an accident or if something should get stolen. You do not need it every day, and yet you have it because you cannot afford to be without it. Is your job not more important than a TV or a cellphone?
Many things occur daily in the workplace for which employees might suddenly need advice on labour law. Solidarity has the biggest labour law practice in South Africa, with three specialised divisions.
Solidarity strives to make South Africa’s places of work healthier and safer. Solidarity has a specialised division that assists employees injured on duty, or with an occupational disease, with the claims process at the Compensation Commissioner. This division investigates many cases where accidents actually occur in and at the workplace and makes suggestions to reduce safety risks. Solidarity’s General Litigation and Labour Court divisions handle as many as 2 500 cases at any given time on behalf of both individual and collective members. The most common queries and cases handled by Solidarity are cases of unfair affirmative action and discrimination, disciplinary hearings, and cases of unfair dismissal, retrenchments, as well as providing labour law advice regarding basic conditions of employment.
In addition, Solidarity has decided to take a giant step into the future and build a new Network of Work. We are going to stay right here, but we are not going to stay silent. We are going to fight and build. Unlike trade unions all over the world, the Solidarity Network is not going to try and stop the tides of change; on the contrary, we are going to ride the wave and rather equip our members and the community to be stronger in the new world of work. Solidarity is actively building knowledge factories that will equip its members to win the war for good work. New networks of occupational guilds will connect people, will help young people to gain access to the workplace, will help with continuous education and training, and will take a stand for the interests of the profession.
- Collective members
Employees who work for big companies with whom Solidarity already has a collective agreement, or who work for companies serviced in a group context are considered as collective by Solidarity. Collective members’ Solidarity membership fees are deducted directly from their salaries by the employer and paid to Solidarity. Members are also automatically allocated to a Solidarity Guild on the basis of their career field.
- Individual members
Solidarity is the only labour institution in South Africa that has a dedicated division for individual members. Individual members are employees at companies with whom Solidarity does not have recognition agreements and where members are not served in a group context. Individual members’ Solidarity membership fees are deducted directly from the employee’s bank account via a debit order. Members are also automatically allocated to a Solidarity Guild on the basis of their career field.
Support members
- Building Fund members
As a Building Fund member, you support the Solidarity Movement with the establishment of training institutions. Building Fund membership is a voluntary contribution of your own choice; consequently, the benefits of Building Fund membership is limited and does not include the labour law benefits of Solidarity membership. As a Building Fund member, your contribution helps to build institutions such as Akademia and Sol-Tech, and thus leave monuments for our descendants.
- Legal Fund members
As a Legal Fund member, you support the Solidarity Movement in its fight against affirmative action, and thus ensure that you and your children are not judged on the basis of race but on the basis of your skills. In this way, we ensure that your future and the future of your children can be free, safe and prosperous. All these legal costs cannot be covered by Solidarity membership fees; therefore, the Solidarity Movement created the Legal Fund, and the public’s support is requested to make these cases possible financially.
Full Solidarity membership distinguishes between Collective and Individual members.
A Solidarity member is part of a much larger NetWork of work. It is much larger than a mere traditional trade union because you have access to so much more benefits and enjoy more protection.
Everyone at Solidarity works zealously and dreams about expanding opportunities for education and training ever further. As part of the annual membership fee increase for Solidarity members, special focus is placed on the funding of educational initiatives and bursary funds.
The membership fee for collective members are recovered directly by employers from employees’ salaries.
The membership fee for individual members, Building Fund members and Legal Fund members are paid by debit order directly from the member’s bank account.
Cancellation of Solidarity membership is subject to 30 days’ written notice that should be submitted directly to the trade union. kansellasies@solidariteit.co.za
